This is the drive we fit by default. Two terabytes is the capacity where the question of what to uninstall stops coming up: Windows, every piece of software you use and a full game library all sit on one volume, and nothing needs managing. What It Pairs With
The primary M.2 slot on any current AM5 or Intel board, as the only drive in the machine. That is rather the point of it: one volume, one place everything goes, no decisions about which disk a game installs to. If the board provides an M.2 heatsink, take the bare drive and fit it under the board’s own cover; if it does not, the heatsink version is available and saves sourcing one separately.
Who This Isn’t For
A machine that already has a boot drive and only needs somewhere to keep games — ask us and we will point you at the right drive for a second slot instead. It is also not built around workloads made of very large sequential transfers all day, where sustained throughput sets the pace rather than everyday responsiveness. And if two terabytes is more than the machine will ever hold, that money does more elsewhere in the build.
Common Questions
Is one 2TB drive better than two 1TB drives?
For most people, yes. One volume means no decisions about where things install and no drive sitting half empty while the other is full. Two drives make sense when you specifically want the boot volume kept clear of a large library, which is a preference rather than a performance matter.
Heatsink version or the bare drive?
It depends on the board. Most current boards include M.2 covers and you cannot use both, so the bare drive is the right buy there. Send us the model and we will tell you which one to order.
How much of the 2TB can I actually use?
Around 1.86TB once formatted, which is how drive capacity has always been counted. Windows and a full set of software take roughly 150GB of that, which leaves comfortable room for a large library on top.
Check your motherboard has a free M.2 2280 slot before ordering, and note that on many boards a secondary M.2 slot shares bandwidth with a SATA port or a PCIe slot, so filling one can disable another.
