Why can I not just add up the rated wattages?
Because those figures describe typical draw, not the peaks. Both the card and the processor can briefly pull well beyond their rating, and a supply has to be sized for those moments rather than the average of them.
Do I need this much for a 5090?
With the processor left at stock the figure comes down noticeably. Send us the exact card and chip and how you plan to run them, and we will tell you where your build actually lands instead of rounding upward for safety.
Will something this large be loud?
Not in normal use. The Platinum rating means less of the power becomes heat, and the fan only has reason to work hard when the machine genuinely is. Most of the time it is running far below what it could deliver.
